WHAT IS BEST?

The happy child whose merry feet Have led him far to-day, Becomes, at last, as sets the sun, E’en weary of his play; And creeping back to welcome rest Finds mother’s arms are always best.
The maid, allured by pleasure’s voice To try life’s giddy dance, Finds disappointment lurking there, And wakes some day, perchance, To know that life is more than jest, And the quaint old homestead still is best.
The youth, ambitious, turns his eyes Across the tossing sea, Sees visions bright of wealth and fame, And longs to wander free, Yet learns, as ventures lose their zest, The fatherland at last is best.
And he who tastes earth’s passing joys Of passion, pride, and praise, Finds, as the dial turns its course To count life’s closing days, That worldly honors give no rest, Thy kingdom, Lord, is always best.
