Suicide

Suicide.—The New York Monthly World records the number of suicides of 1900 as 6,755, of which the cause in 3,147 is given as despondency; in 2,284 as unknown; other causes, insanity, ill health, domestic infelicity, liquor, disappointed love, business losses. And after all, save the insane, could be written “despondency.” The increase over 1890 is given at 25 per cent., and the same percentage of increase is given in the number of murders, while the population increased but 20 per cent. There were 115 lynchings in the United States the past year, 107 colored and 8 white, and 119 legal executions. The record is an appalling one.
