Poor France!

Poor France!—France is in the throes of a revolution. Her days have all been stormy, at least the political weather never settled, but it seems now that the tempest is breaking. She is reaping the fruits not only of rejecting God, but of driving out His people. When France drove from her borders the Reformation, she brought disaster to the nation. If when she admitted it again she had wholly divorced Church and State, and so have given the Gospel free course, her national wounds would have been “mollified” or healed. But the Protestants of France have been in the main false to their trust, and the nation is in a condition of anarchy. Her boasted motto of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity is denied, and, “Down with the Jews,” “Up with the army,” whatever its moral condition, seem to be the present slogan of the controlling elements. Those who have read of the times of a century ago are seeing history repeating itself in France now; and not only in France, but in the world. We are right under the shadows of mighty cataclysms foretold in “the sure word of prophecy.” Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments.
