Christ's Victory Over Death at the Cross

WHEN Jesus died upon the cross, “the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.” Matt. 27: 50-53. It is through death that Jesus destroys him that hath the power of death, that is, the devil. Heb. 2: 14. He did not go into the grave a conquered victim, but a conqueror. In death he gained the victory, as the opening graves testified. Thus it is that even in death itself “we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” Rom. 8: 37.
