For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
Many among the Corinthian believers had become feeble and diseased, and a large number had died. The weakness was not rare or isolated but widespread in the church, with sickness prevailing and death claiming many lives. This affliction and loss of life came as a direct consequence of partaking of the Lord's Supper in an unworthy manner. They failed to discern the Lord's body, treating the sacred ordinance without the reverence and self-examination it requires, and for this cause judgment fell upon them in bodily suffering and death.
