2 Kings 6:18
And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
The men who came down to Elisha were an armed Syrian host with horses and chariots sent to seize him, after the king of Syria learned that Elisha had exposed his ambush plans against Israel and defeated his designs. Immediately before the blinding, Elisha's servant had his eyes opened to see the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha. Elisha prayed for the Lord to strike the Syrians who came down against him with blindness.
The Lord struck them with blindness in answer to Elisha's word, leaving them unable to recognize where they were being led. Elisha then told the blinded men they were on the wrong road and in the wrong city, led them to Samaria, and there their eyes were opened to find themselves in the midst of Samaria. Elisha forbade the king of Israel to kill the captives, instead had them fed with bread and water and sent back to their master, after which the raiding bands of Syria stopped coming into the land of Israel. The verse reveals God as an ever-present helper in difficulty and trial who delivered His servant, shows Elisha as true to principle and true to God with work bearing divine credentials, and stands as an admonition for those on whom the ends of the world have come.
