2 Thessalonians 1:10

When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe ( because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

When He is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, Jesus will be honored and marveled at in those who believed the testimony preached among them, and they will share in His glory. He will come personally as the same Jesus who ascended, no longer veiled in humility but as King of kings with His own glory and the Father's glory and all heaven's angels. That day brings rest and deliverance to troubled believers who endured persecution, when the dead in Christ rise and the mortal puts on immortality, while it brings vengeance and everlasting destruction upon those who know not God and obey not the gospel. Those who will be His wonder then are those whose faith grows exceedingly and whose love abounds, who endure in obedient, unselfish faith that purifies the soul and makes them like Him in character. He is glorified in His people in part now when His saving power is seen in their victory over the world, but He is admired in them in full only at His second coming, so believers are to prepare to meet Him in peace by prayer, study of the Word, and wholehearted service.

Words and Historical Setting

Paul wrote to encourage troubled believers in Thessalonica about the second advent. That advent is a very old doctrine taught with joy and triumph, giving high authority for faith in the soon coming of Christ with no taint of heresy.

The phrase in that day points to the day when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels to be glorified in His saints and admired in all them that believe. It belongs to the joyful, triumphant account of His revelation and judgment, bringing encouragement to those who wait for Him. The glorification is for those whose faith grows exceedingly and whose charity abounds, who endure persecutions and tribulations with patience.

He comes personally in the clouds as the same Jesus who ascended escorted by the heavenly host. He is the One who now serves as Advocate and Friend at court, pleading the cases of all who accept Him as Saviour. He returns with His own glory and the Father's glory and heaven's angels, no longer with divine glory concealed in human form and humility as at the first advent, but as King of kings and Lord of lords. His second appearing with power and great glory surpasses anything seen or imagined.

The added clause because our testimony among you was believed means the believers had believed the testimony preached among them. This was illustrated by one convicted by the message of Christ's coming who accepted the truth and became a believer, to the rejoicing of others when she was later found continuing in the faith and loving His appearing.

His coming takes place when the cry of peace and safety is sounded from every part of the Christian world, while the sleeping church and the world ask in scorn where the promise of His coming is, saying all things continue as from the beginning. Widespread and manifest ungodliness, even under the appearance and cloak of Christianity and sanctification, with prevailing iniquity and hostility against God's remnant people, will continue to a terrible degree until that coming. That coming ends the present age of rejection of grace amid the perils of the last days, while God's people are proved and tested so the difference between those who serve God and those who do not is discerned.

Events of That Day

That day brings rest to believers who have been troubled, enduring persecutions and tribulations, and they share in His glory through God's grace. The same revelation is the revealing of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His mighty angels. At that revelation He takes vengeance in flaming fire upon those who know not God and obey not the gospel, who are punished with everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power. His coming as Conqueror brings judgment and desolation to sinners, who are banished from the Lord's presence and destroyed by fire, while His oppressed and scattered faithful people are made glad by the voice of God and behold His glory.

At His coming with the great sound of a trumpet calling the dead from their prison house, His people are delivered from the grave. Those who died in Jesus rise triumphantly, having a part in His victory over death, and believers who shared in His humiliation and sufferings then share in His glory. Then this mortal puts on immortality and this corruptible puts on incorruption, the vile mortal corruptible body changed to be fashioned like His glorious immortal incorruptible body. The saints then receive holy flesh and are taken to heaven, not left to remain on earth.

His followers rejoice in His presence and welcome Him, while the wicked flee. The righteous will stand boldly before those who afflicted them, while the wicked will be astonished at the salvation they once scorned and will recognize the righteous as God's children and saints. Those who have joined themselves to the Lord and stood on Christ's side will be among those who share His glory and are objects of wonder. His coming from heaven before long vindicates His authority and the laws of His kingdom.

Christ Glorified in Saints

When he comes he is glorified and honored and marveled at in his saints, and admired as an object of wonder in all who believe, and believers share his glory and are themselves objects of wonder. That day brings rest to believers who have endured persecution and trouble, and they share in his glory through God's grace. Those who have joined themselves to the Lord and stood on his side will be among them, and the coming calls for preparation and readiness to stand before the Son of man. Then the righteous will stand boldly before those who afflicted them, while the wicked will be astonished at the salvation they once scorned and will recognize the righteous as God's children and saints. Jesus is able to keep everything believers commit to him safe until that day. Christ is the life and joy of his people, and because he lives they too will live.

The redeemed will shine with the glory of the Father and the Son, washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb, and having been washed clean they will meet him in peace. They will accompany Christ into the heavenly courts as his trophies of victory and as witnesses that his mission of suffering and sacrifice was not in vain. The angels will welcome Christ with them as trophies of his victory. Believers should prepare for his coming and the judgment so they can meet him in peace.

Then he sees of the travail of his soul and is satisfied, and immortal beings break forth in songs of triumph and victory to the Lamb, singing worthy, worthy is the Lamb, whose effects reach into eternity. He is glorified in them because he is the light and love and joy and life of his people, and because he lives they shall live also, sharing his life until he comes to be glorified and admired in them. This calls every soul to be vigilant in doing spiritual duty because a great work lies ahead. His coming brings life to his self-denying people, because they live through him.

When his church reflects heaven's order and divine harmony, endowed with his righteousness, it displays the full and final riches of his mercy and grace and love. Its purity and perfection are the reward of his humiliation and add to his glory, with Christ as the center from whom all glory radiates. He is also glorified in his believing people now when those with great light walk in accordance with it and entrust themselves and their interests to his guidance as their Saviour. They are known as belonging to Christ by the way his saving power is manifested through them, as they gain victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil through him. That walk fills the mind with high and holy thoughts, makes the meditations of the heart pure and sacred, and makes the great plan the theme of conversation, so that truth goes forth as a lamp that burneth.

He is admired in believers not in this present life but at his second coming, for while sin is forgiven now its results remain and are not now wholly removed, and holy flesh is not received now. The saints receive holy flesh only when he comes with a great sound of a trumpet to call the dead from their prison house, changing the vile mortal corruptible body to be fashioned like his glorious immortal incorruptible body, for taking to heaven and not remaining on earth. Then this mortal puts on immortality and this corruptible puts on incorruption.

Character of Those Who Believe

Those admired in that day are those whose faith grows exceedingly and whose charity abounds, who endure persecutions and tribulations with patience in faith that works by love and purifies the soul. Such patient endurance is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God that they may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God for which they suffer and worthy of this calling, God fulfilling all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power. Thus it is not human agencies but the name of the Lord Jesus Christ that is glorified in them and they in Him according to grace, which is reason not to be discouraged by unbelief and opposition coming into the churches but to keep the mind stayed upon the Lord, gird on His armor, and rest the whole matter with God when the way cannot be seen.

Those truly united to Christ cannot practice selfishness, for when God's people turn from Him their actions show they are not spiritually one with Him. Selfish, careless conduct does not reveal God's glory and cannot belong to such, whose actions are to be straightforward and shaped by the Spirit. Those who will meet Him in peace are distinguished by obedience to the Lord's authority and to God's commandments, without evading or explaining them away. He comes personally in the clouds in the glorious appearing of God and Saviour Jesus Christ, His glory revealed in His saints, no longer with divine glory concealed in human form as at the first advent but with His own glory and the Father's glory and heaven's angels as King of kings and Lord of lords, surpassing anything seen or imagined.

They are those who love His appearing and have served Him faithfully, living in close communion with Him and reflecting the knowledge of God's glory. They recognize Him as the one they have known in close fellowship and rejoice to meet Him as their Redeemer, rejoicing in His presence while the wicked flee, His oppressed and scattered faithful people made glad by the voice of God and beholding His glory while His coming as Conqueror brings judgment and desolation to sinners. That knowledge of God's glory reflected in their lives prepares them for the communion of heaven, and His splendor shines upon them. To welcome the Redeemer with joy and to see His face they must be like Him in character, for His character is merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, a prospect of wonderful glory when He comes in all His glory to be admired in those who believe.

They are vessels unto honor who receive the latter rain, who fear God's name and grow up as calves of the stall, seeking to be like Jesus in character with no envy or jealousy in their hearts. Being among them now, near the close of this earth's history, means not keeping Jesus in the background but magnifying His grace and exalting His infinite compassion and love, and faithfully watching as watchmen on the walls of Zion to declare the time of night. Belief in Him begins with knowing Him, and genuine knowledge builds confidence through obedience to His Word. Those who believe in His name receive God's gift of life, truth, and righteousness and become sons of God, known as belonging to Christ by the way His saving power is manifested through them as they gain victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil through Him, entrusting themselves and their interests wholly to His guidance and to their Redeemer until that day, for He is able to keep what is committed to Him safe.

Preparation and Present Hope

Believers should prepare for His coming and the judgment so they can meet Him in peace and stand boldly before the Son of man. Daily prayer, study of God's Word, and obedience in view of His soon return are the way to be ready, and to be among them is a precious privilege. Looking onward and upward to that future period when He shall come to be admired by His saints and glorified in all them that believe is reason now for a contented mind, for living to His name's glory, for speaking His praises with thanksgiving, and for rising above worry, complaint, and sadness. Those who want to meet Him with joy must keep the world from taking first place and give heart, mind, soul, strength, and service to God. Because He is the light and love and joy of His people and will be glorified in His saints, every soul is called to be vigilant in doing spiritual duty, for a great work lies ahead.

God's people must warn the world to prepare for His appearing with power and great glory and keep it fresh before minds. Near the close of earth's history this means not keeping Jesus in the background but magnifying His grace and exalting His infinite compassion and love, and faithfully watching as watchmen on the walls of Zion to declare the time of night. Unbelief and opposition coming into the churches is no reason for discouragement, but for keeping the mind stayed upon the Lord, girding on His armor, and resting the whole matter with God when the way cannot be seen. Learning that is sanctified through the Spirit and grounded in knowledge of Christ will endure until His coming and will not be left behind. He sanctifies human talents employed for His glory and makes human learning strong and pure and ennobling with a foundation in knowledge of Himself, and it is retained through sanctification of the spirit.

The hope of seeing Him in power and great glory is reason not to remain in bondage to sin. His coming brings life to His self-denying people, because they live through Him. Jesus is able to keep everything believers commit to Him safe until the day He is glorified in His saints and admired in all who believe. Belief begins with knowing Him, and genuine knowledge builds confidence through obedience to His Word, so that those who believe in His name receive God's gift of life, truth, and righteousness, become sons of God, and can entrust themselves wholly to their Redeemer.
