Ezekiel Sees the Four Living Creaturesby KalebRosendahl

Ezekiel 1:10

As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.

The vision belonged to Ezekiel in exile in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar, where the hand of the Lord was upon him. Each of the four living creatures had four faces — the face of a man, the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle — appearing among wheels beneath the throne of God.

The living beings and the wheels within wheels at first appeared intricate and confusing and hard to explain to the finite eye. What seemed like confusion is directed by infinite wisdom and by the hand and Spirit of God, bringing perfect order and harmony out of confusion, with every wheel and every part working in its proper and right place in harmony with every other part. The vision reveals the God of Israel enthroned above earthly rulers and His power governing the world. It shows heaven closely connected with events on earth, and God caring for and overseeing those who are loyal to Him.

It teaches that God directs the work while human agents each have an appointed part to perform, so workers for God must not claim control over matters that belong to God but must depend on Him as their Instructor while faithfully doing their own part. The vision in the first and second chapters of Ezekiel is to be studied with humility and earnest prayer by every worker for God. The four-faced living beings form wings on each side of God's cloudy chariot that carries the redeemed upward to the New Jerusalem, with living wheels beneath it. As the chariot rolls upward the wheels cry Holy and the moving wings cry Holy, joining the retinue of angels crying Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, while the redeemed shout Alleluia.
