Hosea 10:4
They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.
Hosea 10:4 was addressed to the northern kingdom in a time of spiritual darkness when vice and iniquity flourished and its leaders and priests were corrupt. It came near the end of Israel's time as a kingdom, when the nation was extremely wicked and its rulers repeatedly came to power through conspiracy. It warned of the northern kingdom's coming captivity amid its moral decay.
The verse portrays false oaths and dishonest covenants as producing corrupt judgment that spreads through the land like poisonous hemlock in the furrows of a field. It condemns false declarations of allegiance to God by a people who had broken their covenant with Him. It likewise condemns alliances with nations such as Assyria and Egypt that violated His command not to make covenants with the surrounding nations.
