Judges 8:33

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

As soon as Gideon was dead the children of Israel turned again to idolatry. They made Baal-berith their god. His own household was especially involved in gross idolatry after his death. The unauthorized worship he had set up became a snare that helped lead Israel away, as the people came to revere its costly ephod and breastplate.

The services connected with that worship deteriorated into feasting, dissipation, and licentiousness, drawing Israel away from the Lord. This illustrates the repeated pattern of returning to idols once the deliverer was dead and his restraining authority was removed. Coming after deliverance from oppression, this return restarted the cycle of backsliding and chastisement.
