And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
This verse closes the series of challenges by the leaders against Jesus, for they were unable to answer Him a word, and from that day forth they no longer dared to question Him. In verses 41-46 Jesus was testing whether the Pharisees recognized that the Messiah was more than a merely human descendant of David. They correctly answered that the Messiah was David's son, agreeing with prophecy and the people's acclamations, but that answer did not show that they recognized His divinity.
Jesus countered by pointing out that David, speaking by the Spirit with prophetic foresight, called the Messiah his Lord despite the Messiah's human descent from David. The meaning is that the Messiah is both David's descendant son and David's divine Lord, the Son of God, and therefore more than a merely human descendant, revealing His divine identity. David foresaw Christ taking His place at God's right hand.
The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost confirmed that Jesus had received authority as priest and king and was the Anointed One over His people. The warnings in the surrounding teaching apply to people in every age who reject Jesus as Redeemer: unless they repent, the judgment foreshadowed by the examples will be theirs.
