Psalms 105:41

He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.

Psalm 105:41 belongs to the recorded history of Israel and recalls the wilderness experience in which God opened the rock and caused water to gush out abundantly, running in dry places like a river to sustain Israel in the desert. The water did not flow continually from Horeb, but wherever the people needed it, it gushed from a cleft in the rock beside their camp. The spiritual Rock that followed Israel and supplied their spiritual drink was Christ, who caused the water to flow and was the source of their temporal and spiritual blessings throughout their wanderings.

The wider wilderness experience included being under the cloud and passing through the sea, being baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and eating the same spiritual meat, yet with many of them God was not well pleased and they were overthrown in the wilderness. The verse displays God's goodness, mercy, and love in His dealings with Israel, as part of a psalm that calls readers to remember that goodness, mercy, and love. Israel's wilderness experience recorded in the verse stands as a warning and lesson that God's people in the last days especially need to study.

Psalms 105 and 106 should be read at least once every week. All who claim to be children of God should read the verse carefully to learn the necessity of appreciating God's goodness, mercy, and love. The words of the psalm are to be appropriated to individual experience by taking God at His word, and thanking the Lord for His goodness and enduring mercy and declaring it as one of the redeemed makes His Word a stronghold that increases faith and prevents it from diminishing. Such appropriation guards against distrust, discouragement, perplexity, clouds and trials, and leads to praise for His wonderful works with a fixed heart, good courage, and talk of faith.
