Psalm 119 Verses Over a Sunrise Lakeby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 119:172

My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

The tongue is to speak of God's word because that word is altogether right, holy, just, good and true, for every one of His commandments is righteousness. That law shares God's own righteous and truthful character, revealing and expressing His will, mind and nature. Righteousness is conformity to that law, whose two great principles are love to God and love to man, so that love fulfills the law and the law sets out the principles of right-doing. Keeping all the commandments is part of human duty, to be obeyed in the strength of Jesus, as Christ Himself taught by example and displayed its righteousness in His life. The Spirit leads in the path of keeping the commandments and guides into all truth, so any claim to be led by the Spirit while turning away from the law is false and must be tried by God's Word.

Righteousness of God's Law

All of the commandments are righteousness, completely right and holy, just and good and true. Every commandment without exception is righteous, and together they are righteousness itself. The law shares God's own righteous and truthful character, revealing and expressing His will and mind and nature. Knowing Him through His word gives knowledge of Him, and that knowledge is the foundation for forming character in harmony with Him.

Righteousness is conformity to the law, and the two great principles of the law are love to God and love to man. Love fulfills the law, and the law sets out the principles of right-doing. Christ's life displayed that righteousness, teaching obedience by example. Because the law expresses who God is, it is unchangeable and must endure as long as God Himself endures, enduring like its Author.

The commandments express the principles of righteousness and serve as a rule for life, defining the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error. God's law is truth, holy and just and good, so a character formed through obedience to it is holy. The commandments were given as law to govern the people He created.

Speaking the Word in Life

The tongue is to speak of God's word because that word expresses His righteousness and is fit to be spoken. The commandments express the principles of righteousness and serve as a rule for life, defining the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error. Study of Scripture gives knowledge of God, for His righteous commandments reflect His character. Knowing God through His word and creation gives the foundation for true education and for building character in harmony with Him.

Reverent study of God's word brings the student's mind into communion with the infinite mind, refining and ennobling the character while expanding and strengthening the mental powers. Keeping all the commandments is part of human duty, for every commandment is righteous and reflects His character. God's requirements are to be obeyed in the strength of Jesus because they are righteousness. Christ taught this obedience by His example, setting out the principles of right-doing, and His life displayed the law's righteousness.

The Spirit leads in the path of keeping the commandments, for every one of God's commandments is righteousness and His law is truth. The Spirit guides into all truth, and claiming to be led by the Spirit while turning away from hearing the law is false. Every spirit must be tried by God's Word. Any teaching that does not speak according to the law and the testimony has no light in it.

A character formed through obedience to the law, which embodies the principles of righteousness and is holy, just, and good, is therefore holy. Purity of heart belongs with right words and actions, as seen in the prayer for a clean heart and for words and thoughts to be acceptable to God, given as an example to follow. The commandments are completely right and holy, given as law to govern the people He created, and bold and defiant breaking of that law is wickedness that God will certainly rise up to punish. He has endured continual insult and growing defiance against His commandments with very great forbearance, restraining His own power, while giving continual light to those who stay obedient. Men have changed His laws, and because of that change life is becoming unbearable through cruelty. Choosing knowledge that comes through disobedience is rebellion against Christ and leads to eternal death.
