Psalms 17:4

Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

Concerning the works of men, by the word from God's lips a person is kept from the paths of the destroyer, the destructive paths of sin and human wrongdoing. That keeping is loyalty to God's law turning from sin and restoring the fallen. It happens when Scripture is received into the soul and hidden in the heart through close study, with every promise and every word proceeding from God's mouth lived by.

Once so received, the word is a strong safeguard and defense and barrier against temptation. Its strength helps the tempted resist temptation and evil and avoid sin, keeping the mind from influences that would draw it away from God. Christ proved this in the wilderness conflict with Satan, where He relied on God and resisted temptation only by the Word, answering It is written, and thereby prepared the way for others to overcome through trust in Him. The same means is given to every struggling person who lives by its promises.

When assailed by temptation, looking not to circumstances or to the weakness of self but to the power of the Word gives all its strength to overcome, so that united to Christ by faith sin has no more dominion and perfection of character is reached. Keeping off the destroyer's path includes obeying God's word in bodily life by taking a firm stand on health reform, refusing tobacco and liquor, and keeping the brain clear and healthy and strong so righteousness can be told from unrighteousness and evil can be recognized and avoided. Christ and the whole heavenly host work for those who live this way.
