Song of Solomon 4:1
Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead. Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead.
The beloved is called fair and beautiful in tender, poetic imagery. That warm, figurative language is Eastern, proper to the time of its writing, and gives no ground for objection when read in that setting. The love of bridegroom and bride is a figure of Christ's love for His church. The picture holds both sides together, expressing Christ's love for the church and the church's answering love, which often lacks faithfulness and constancy.
