Song of Solomon 8:1

O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.

Song of Solomon 8:1 comes from one of the one thousand and five songs or poems written by Solomon. It stands in the closing part of the Song. It forms part of a dialogue carried on by various parties.

It is an Oriental love poem told in vivid, warm, figurative language. Its intimate imagery belongs to the time in which it was written and gives no ground for objection when read in that setting. Solomon's experiences in it may serve as types of Christ and the church.

It is a poetical picture or parable of Christ and His church, displaying His wonderful love. It also displays the church's love in response to Him, though hers is often lacking in faithfulness and constancy. It is to be read alone with God while keeping that picture of Christ and the church in mind.
