Ac-cĕpt'a-ble, a.

adjective

a. [L. Lat. acceptabilis, Fr. acceptable.] Capable, worthy, or sure of being accepted or received with pleasure; hence, pleasing to a receiver; gratifying; agreeable; welcome; as, an acceptable present.

Formerly, and for a long time, this word and its derivatives, acceptable and acceptableness, were pronounced with the accent on the first syllable; but the difficulty of the sound and the violation of analogy caused it to be transferred to the second. See § 113, and Pron. Synop., § 130.
