Ag'o-nist, n.

noun

n. [Gr. ἀγωνιστής, Lat. agonista.] 1. One who contends for the prize in public games. Milton has used Agonistes in this sense, and so called his tragedy, from the similitude of Samson's exertions in slaying the Philistines to prize-fighting. 2. (Eccl. Hist.) A disciple of Donatus.
