n. [Fr., Pr., Sp., & Pg. canal, It. canale, from Lat. canalis, originally adj. from canna, reed, pipe. See CAN, CANE, CHANNEL, and KENNEL.]

  1. An artificial water-course, particularly one constructed for the passage of boats or vessels.
  2. (Anat.) A duct in the body for the passage of liquids or solids; a channel leading to or from certain organs; as, the alimentary canal. Dunglison.
