n. [The first syllable, car, may be a corruption of the Gael. & Ir. cir, cior, pronounced kĭr, kior, crest, comb. Cf. GREBE.] (Ornith.) A fowl belonging to the Colymbus, or diver, family, and species Podiceps cristatus, or crested grebe. It is about the size of a goose. Buchanan.
