(dă-bū′, or dā-bū′), n. [Fr. début, properly the first cast or throw at play, from but, aim, mark. See But, n.] A beginning or first attempt; hence, a first appearance before the public, as of an actor or public speaker, &c.; the beginning of an enterprise.
