Finch, n.

(66), n. [A-S. finc, N. H. Ger. fink, M. H. Ger. vinke, O. H. Ger. finco, fincho, D. vink, allied to W. pine, a finch, brisk, smart, gay.] (Ornith.) A small singing bird, belonging to the genus Fringilla. The word is often used in composition, as in chaff-finch, goldfinch.
