Gŏd'wĭt, n.

noun

n. [Probably from A-S. gôd, good, and wiht, creature, wight.] (Ornith.) A bird (the Limosa melanura), having long legs, and a long, flexible bill. It undergoes three almost complete changes of plumage, so that it has received, at different times, several different specific names. This bird frequents fens and the banks of rivers, throughout Europe and in the north of Africa. Its flesh is esteemed a great delicacy.
