Hām'mer-bēam, n.

noun

(Gothic Arch.) A beam acting as a tie at the feet of a pair of principal rafters, but not extending so as to connect the opposite sides. It is generally supported by a rib springing from a corbel below, and also itself supports another rib, forming, with that springing from the opposite side, an arch.
