Hȳ-pē'ri-on, n.
n. [Lat. Hyperion, Gr. Ὑπερίων; according to some ancients, from ὑπέρ ἰών, he that walks on high, moves above us, but more probably it is a shortened form of the patronym. Ὑπεριωνίδης, son of Hyperion.] (Myth.) Apollo, the god of day, who was distinguished for his beauty.
So excellent a king; that was, to this, Hyperion to a satyr. Shak.
Pronounced Hyperi'on in the classics.
