Lau'da-nŭm, n.

(Synop., § 130), n. [Originally the same word as laudanum, labdanum; Pr. & Fr. laudanum, It. & Sp. laudano, ladano. This word can not be derived from Lat. laudandum, to be praised, nor was it first introduced by Paracelsus, as it previously existed in Provençal. See LADANUM.] A preparation of opium, especially in spirit or wine; tincture of opium.
