Mär'o-nīte, n.

noun

n. (Eccl. Hist.) One of a body of nominal Christians, who speak the Arabic language, and reside on Mount Lebanon. They take their name from one Maron, of the sixth century, and were charged with the heresy of the Monothelites, though, as they claim, erroneously. They have, for the last six hundred years, belonged to the Roman Catholic church, though without giving up their ancient peculiarities.
