Pĕn’te-cŏn’ter, n.
n. [Fr. pentécontore, Gr. πεντηκόντορος (sc. ναῦς), from πεντήκοντα, fifty.] (Gr. Antiq.) A Grecian vessel of fifty oars, smaller than a trireme.
☞ “The Greek η being represented in Latin by a, Mitford spells this word pentacont er, and other similar compounds correspondently; but the example set by pentecost, and the utility of distinguishing words derived from the Greek meaning fifty from those that mean five, render the form penteconter by far the more preferable.” Smart.
