Pĕt'al or Pē'tal, n.

(Synop., § 130), n. [Fr. pétale, It. & Sp. pétalo, from Gr. πέταλον, a leaf, a leaf or plate of metal, Lat. petalum, a metal plate, from Gr. πέταλος, outspread, broad, flat, from πεταννύναι, to spread out.] (Bot.) One of the leaves of the corolla, or the colored leaves of a flower.
