Præ'ctise, v. t. & i.
v. t. & i. See PRACTICE.
☞ There is no reason why the noun and verb should not both be spelled with c, as in notice, sacrifice, apprentice, and all like cases where the accent precedes the last syllable. The distinction in spelling between the noun and the verb properly belongs only to words which are accented on the last syllable, as device and devise, where the verb has the sound of īze. The spelling practise tends to give it the same sound, as we see in uneducated persons; and, hence, it is desirable to follow the regular analogy, and write the noun and verb alike.
