a. [Lat. prominēns, p. pr. of prominere, to jut out, to project, from pro, before, forward, and minere, to jut, project; Fr. prominent, It. & Sp. prominente.]

1. Standing out beyond the line or surface of something; jutting; protuberant; in high relief; as, a prominent figure on a vase.
2. Hence, distinctly manifest; conspicuous; likely to attract attention from its size or position; as, a prominent feature of countenance.
3. Eminent; distinguished above others; as, a prominent character.
