Rūsh1, n.
n. [A-S. rise, rice, rixe, ryxa, L. Ger. rusz, risch, Lat. ruscum, allied to Goth. raus, reed.] 1. (Bot.) A plant of the genus Juncus, of many species, growing in wet ground. ☞ Some species are used in bottoming chairs and plaiting mats, and the pith is used in some places for wicks to lamps and rush-lights. The term rush is, however, often loosely applied to various plants having a similar appearance. 2. The merest trifle; a straw. John Bull's friendship is not worth a rush. Arbuthnot.
