Scām'mo-ny, n.

n. [Lat. scammonia, scammonēa, Gr. σκαμμωνία, Fr. scammonée, It. scamonea, Sp. & Pg. escamonea, Pr. escamonea, scamonea.]

1. [Bot.] A plant of the genus Convolvulus (C. scammonia).
2. An inspissated sap obtained from the plant Convolvulus scammonia, of a blackish-gray color, a nauseous smell, and a bitter and acrid taste. It is used in medicine as a cathartic. The best scammony comes from Aleppo, in light, spongy masses, easily friable. That of Smyrna is black, ponderous, and mixed with extraneous matter.
