Sĭr'loin, n.

noun

n. [O. Eng. surlois, surloine, surloyne, fr. Fr. surlonge, from sur, upon, super, over, and longe, loin.] A loin of beef. [Written also surloin.]

☞ The sirloin has been erroneously supposed by some to have received its name from the story of its having been sportively knighted by one of the English kings when in a fit of good humor.
