Trāp'pist, n.
n. [Fr. trappiste.] (Rom. Cath. Church.) One of an order of monks founded in 1098, and confirmed in 1119. They were originally Cistercians, and received their name from La Trappe, in Normandy, where a community of them occupied an abbey. The order was introduced into the United States in 1803, its members devoting themselves to agriculture and the cure of souls.
