Trous'ers, n. pl.

nounplural

n. pl. [O. Fr. trousses, breeches worn by pages, from trousse, trosse, a bundle, a truss, q. v. Cf. TROSSERS, TROWSERS, and TROUSE.] A loose garment worn by males, extending from the waist to the knee or to the ankle, and covering the lower limbs.

Synonyms— Pantaloons. — TROUSERS. PANTALOONS. In the United States, the original word trousers is almost laid aside, the term being only applied to the loose garment of sailors or laborers, while pantaloons is used in all other cases. The English adhere to the old term in respect equally to the dress of gentlemen and all others, making much less use than we do of the word pantaloons in speaking of this part of the dress.
