Tur'key, n.
n. [So called because it was erroneously believed that it came originally from Turkey.] (Ornith.) A large gallinaceous fowl (the Meleagris gallopavo), a native of America. The flesh is highly valued for food. Wild turkeys abound in the forests of America, and the fowl has been domesticated in America and in other countries. Another species (the Meleagris ocellata) is found about the Bay of Honduras.
