Ŭm'bel, n.
n. [Lat. umbella, a little shadow, umbrella, diminutive of umbra, shade; It. umbella, Fr. ombelle, an umbel.] (Bot.) A kind of flower cluster in which the flower-stalks spread moderately from a common point, and form a common plane or convex surface above, as in the carrot. It is simple or compound; in the latter case, each peduncle bears another little umbel, called umbellet, or umbel-lule.
