Violone, n.

(vē/o-lō'nā), n. [It. violone, augment. of viola, a viol.] (Mus.) The largest instrument of the base-viol kind, having strings tuned an octave below those of the violoncello; the contra-basso;—called also double-base. [Written also violono.]
