Wāx'-wing, n.
n. (Ornith.) A bird of the genus Ampelis (Bombycilla of some authors), about six or eight inches long. There are several beautiful species, so named because most of them have small, oval, horny appendages on the secondaries of the wings, of the color of red sealing-wax. The European species is A. garrula; the American is A. Carolinensis, or cedar-bird.
