CO-OPERATION CORNER.

By Editor

MANY of our faithful missionary workers would gladly use much larger clubs of the SIGNS than they are now circulating if they could afford to do so, while there are others who would be just as glad to pay for such clubs if they knew who needed them.

For these reasons we have opened the “Co-operation Corner.” It will contain requests for clubs of papers for use in various fields, short reports from those who are using such clubs, acknowledgments of money received, and such other information as will bring together those who can use papers but can not pay for them, and those who can pay for papers but are not situated so they can use them.

Our recent appeal for the Free School of Calcutta, India, has met another hearty response in the way of a check for ten dollars from G. W. Copple, of Waukomis, O. T. May God’s blessing go with these papers to far-away India.

S. R. Hogue of The Dalles, Oregon, thanks us for sending him papers, and says, “I have a fine opportunity to distribute periodicals, as people come here from a hundred miles or over with their wheat. I could use fifty SIGNS a day if I had them.”

We are sending him ten copies, the price of which is $7.50. Are there any who would like to help on this club?

Christ as the Ideal for the Modern Church

The “Congregationalist” desires to secure a presentation of ideals for the modern church from the standpoint of the outsider.

Well, here is one, which, if practically adopted by the modern church, would preclude the necessity of any other. Jesus says, “I, if I be lifted up, will ‘draw all men unto Me.’” He said to His chosen representatives, “Follow Me, and I will make you ‘fishers of men.’” He “went about doing good,” and His counsel to His followers is, “Let your light ‘so shine before men, that they may see your good ‘works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Christ was the ideal of the apostles and their fellow-laborers. Peter voiced the general sentiment in these words: “There is none other name under ‘heaven given among men, whereby we must be ‘saved.” And Paul, the one born “out of due ‘time,” a very successful minister, “determined not ‘to know anything” among the people, “save Jesus ‘Christ, and Him crucified.” And this is the only true Ideal, from “the standpoint of the outsider,” or from any other standpoint, in the legitimate work of “the modern church.”

A Word Makes a Difference.

In replying to a question sometime ago the SIGNS said:—

Apparently the sun revolves around the earth from east to west once in twenty-four hours.

A correspondent takes exception to this and says:—

This is the old idea the people had about the solar system a hundred years ago. The earth is revolving around the sun, not the sun revolving around the earth.

But if our correspondent will kindly read what he quoted from the SIGNS, he will see that we did not say that the sun revolves around the earth. We said, “Apparently the sun revolves around the earth;” that is, in appearance it seems to. Is not that true? A little word ignored or misunderstood makes quite a difference sometimes.

Books for Building Character

See our “combination” offer on previous page. How can you better help your boy or girl to start a library than by a purchase of just such books as these? Better than starting a library is the building of character, in which these books will prove a valuable help.

The Greatest Thing in the World

By Editor

“The Greatest Thing in the World,” a sermon by Pastor G. E. Fifield, begins in this issue on page 5. We sincerely hope that it will be read and received. We wish we could have published it all in one issue; but could not; it is too long. It is worth reading in parts, and then as a whole.

A Series of Studies on the Law

By Editor

We begin, the Lord willing, in our issue of November 13, a series of studies on the law by E. J. Hibbard. Brother Hibbard has been Bible instructor for years, in various institutions, more lately in the American Medical Missionary College of Chicago. He is now Bible instructor in Healdsburg College. These studies will prove of great help to our readers who wish to know more of the great law of the universe.

Correction

Correction.—Through some mistake in pencil or type it was stated on this page two weeks ago, concerning the Good Health magazine: “It teaches peo-‘ple not alone how to get well, but how to keep well. ‘It will save, if its counsel is followed, much more ‘than its price every year in doctors’ bills. It will ‘leave you with neither repleted body nor repleted ‘purse.’” The mistake is a mere matter of a letter, but it means a great deal. It was designed to say, “It will leave you with neither ‘depleted body nor ‘depleted purse.’” Good Health is a money-saver. This dollar magazine may be obtained for one year, together with the SIGNS OF THE TIMES for $1.75.

“THE GREAT EMPIRES OF PROPHECY.”

The only true view of events in this world is God’s view. The only correct vision is His vision. He has given us His view of the nature, character, and end of the great nations of this world, of the nations who have shaped and molded the world, in His “more sure word of prophecy.” This, together with the history of the past, is the guide in the present. There are many statesmen, politicians, diplomats, rulers, in darkness or perplexity now, because of the condition of affairs in the nations of earth. And yet they need not be; God has given all this in His Word.

Do you wish to know this “History in Advance”?—Study the prophetic Word. Do you wish help in the study of this Word? There are a few books which will help you. One of these is “The Great ‘Empires of Prophecy,’” by A. T. Jones. It covers in its field, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Grecia, Rome, and the kingdoms into which Rome was divided. It traces these from Nebuchadnezzar to the present day in forty-six chapters, giving excellent historical testimony. It will give much fuller testimony than can possibly be given in articles in a paper. It contains twenty-two maps. The price for this large octavo volume of 696 pages is only $2.00. It may be obtained from this office.

McKinley’s Assassination and Political Abuse

The claim that is made that what was said in political papers against Mr. McKinley during the last campaign incited his assassination, is disproved by the assassin himself, who declared that he had nothing personal against Mr. McKinley, and that he killed him, not because he did not like the man, but because of his opposition to government of any kind. The Springfield Republican well illustrates one extreme, now so widely manifest: “If you have a grudge against any one or anything, dead or alive, make him or it responsible for anarchy.” At the same time we do not believe in this political abuse and belittling of public men.

Inconsistency of Sunday-law Arguments.

The effort to make liquor-selling on Sunday appear worse than the same traffic on other days leads men into many inconsistent positions. The New York Examiner (Baptist) quotes Mr. Low, Republican candidate for mayor, as saying that the extreme of the Sunday-excise law is the extreme of injustice. Then by way of reply it says this is an aphorism which Mr. Low would hardly apply to the case of a murderer condemned to death. There would be good logic in the comparison if murder were forbidden by the law only on Sunday. Every argument for Sunday prohibition of liquor-selling is a tacit admission that the traffic is proper on other days. To be consistent with its criticism of Mr. Low, the Examiner must assume that murder is wrong only on Sunday. Truly, “the legs of the lame are not equal.”

Schools of Brutality.

The following from the Springfield Republican of not long ago is worthy of repeating:—

Six thousand people witnessed the burning of a negro at the stake in Tennessee last Sunday. Every one of them was brutalized by the spectacle. But, if our point be worth consideration, not only the six thousand, but every American who read the account of the burning, or noticing the headline turned from it with indifference as from a commonplace of the news, was also brutalized. What, then, is actually going on?—A whole nation of eighty million people is being lowered toward barbarism. It can not be otherwise. The growing practise of burning men at the stake in this country is a revival of one of the lowest forms of savagery. It can not continue without placing our civilization in real peril.

Is it not true? The first instance of the kind horrified the whole nation; now such incidents are mere matters of news. What does this indifference mean but an induration of the finer sensibilities, the chief thing that raises men above the brute, man's moral nature?

The Boxer Movement and Bible Translation

makes quite a difference sometimes.

God overrules and uses many instrumentalities whose principles He does not indorse. He does not indorse the wrath of man, but He sometimes makes it to praise Him. The psalmist says: “Surely ‘the wrath of man shall praise Thee; the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain.’” Ps. 76:10. An incident is now recorded of His overruling the Boxer movement in China for good. That uprising was against foreigners, all of whom are there rated as Christians, and Chinese Christians were the principal sufferers at the hands of the Boxers. Now it is said that the insurrection has made possible the translation of the Bible in a form which can be read by about three-fourths of the Chinese population.

The Sentinel of Christian Liberty.

By Editor

In 1884 the Pacific Press Publishing Company began the publication of the American Sentinel as a monthly in this city. In 1886 it was published as a weekly, with a continually increasing circulation. In 1890 it was removed to New York City, where it was published till 1900. Last year it was purchased by the International Religious Liberty Association, its name changed to Sentinel of Liberty, and moved to Chicago. A change in the organization of this association making publishing no longer practicable, the journal was re-purchased by the Pacific Press Publishing Company last month. The last weekly issue in Chicago will be dated October 31. It will then be removed to New York, and beginning with November, will be published as a monthly, under the title, The Sentinel of Christian Liberty. At the present the size of page will be that of the popular magazine, as McClure’s, Cosmopolitan, etc., the number of pages sixty-four and cover. The price will be $1.00 a year.

We believe that if rightly conducted and managed, a new and broader career is opening before the Sentinel. The faithful warnings it has given, the admirable lessons it has taught, the valuable instruction it has given, are all needed still in increasing degree. Statesmen, judges, lawyers, professional men of all sorts, need to read it; in fact, in it is food and instruction for all.

The price of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES one year is $1.50.

The Sentinel of Christian Liberty one year is $1.00.

But the publishers of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES offer this paper and the Sentinel of Christian Liberty magazine together for one year at the low rate of $1.75. This is special, and we do not know how soon it may be withdrawn. Send all subscriptions to the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, Oakland, Cal.

Tolstoy’s Perversion of Christianity

It is wonderful how fads take with many, especially if the fad contains a semblance of some striking truth. This is well illustrated in the case of Count Tolstoy, recently excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church. He has some germs of truth in his ideas of self-denial, helping the poor, etc., but he is as far off from the Gospel of Christ as is the Russian Orthodox Church. He believes marriage to be a sin, and frankly avows it. He tells us that those who are “married should regard themselves as sinners.” The “chief trouble is,” he thinks, “that marriage has been regarded as a ‘blessing.’” We quote from the Literary Digest of October 12. The simple fact is that Tolstoy has a religion of his own, which is an utter perversion of Christianity. The strange thing is that Christians can ever seem to indorse him.
