Lyrics
Light the way!
Light the way!
In Worms I stood before the kings and lords of earth,
A world combined against the truth to crush its birth.
My faith was faltering, my heart was filled with dread,
As powers of darkness gathered 'round my weary head.
They hurled their charges, called me enemy of state,
And urged me to submit before it was too late.
But through the anguish, when my soul was wrung with doubt,
Christ, by His infallible Word, would cast the tempter out.
My conscience is bound by the Word of God!
I cannot submit to the councils of men.
Unless I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture,
I cannot and I will not retract!
Here I stand, I can do no other!
Here I stand! May God help me. Amen!
Through every age, the advocates of truth are tried,
By popular religions where the errors hide.
"They are deceived, unlearned, and few," the world exclaims,
Exalting human influence and powerful names.
From age to age, the battle has been fought the same,
Choosing traditions of men or God’s most holy name.
So let us fix our eyes upon the Author's hand,
Not on the human instrument in this dark land.
My conscience is bound by the Word of God!
I cannot submit to the councils of men.
Unless I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture,
I cannot and I will not retract!
Here I stand, I can do no other!
Here I stand! May God help me. Amen!
The final crisis breaks upon a sleeping world,
As Satan's banner of rebellion is unfurled.
The law of God is trampled, made of no effect,
A counterfeit tradition worldly men protect.
The Sabbath is the final test of loyalty,
The point of truth especially in controversy.
But here are they, the patient saints who hold the faith,
And keep God's law, prepared to stand, even to death.
My conscience is bound by the Word of God!
I cannot submit to the councils of men.
Unless I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture,
I cannot and I will not retract!
Here I stand, I can do no other!
Here I stand! May God help me. Amen!
