Turning the World Upside Down: The Impact of Acts 17:6
Is the gospel meant to disrupt the world or restore it to order?
Can you please provide background on this verse.....Reflecting on long history of God calling out those He loves? To motivate you to share God’s Word with others around you.... And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; (Acts 17:6 KJV)

The phrase "turned the world upside down" describes the powerful impact of the gospel message when it is preached and practiced with divine earnestness Acts 17:6. While this was originally a cry of accusation from those moved by envy, it actually serves as a beautiful testimony to the transformative power of God’s Word in every age.
The Historical Background of Acts 17:6
The apostle Paul and his companion Silas visited Thessalonica, where Paul reasoned from the Scriptures for three Sabbath days, proving that Jesus is the Christ Acts 17:1-3. While a great multitude of devout Greeks and leading women believed, the unbelieving Jews became envious Acts 17:4-5. They gathered a mob of "lewd fellows of the baser sort" to create an uproar and assaulted the house of Jason, hoping to find the apostles. When they could not find Paul and Silas, they dragged Jason and other believers before the city rulers, accusing them of harboring men who had "turned the world upside down" and were acting contrary to Caesar by proclaiming another king, Jesus Acts 17:7.
God's Long History of Calling His People
Throughout history, God has called out individuals and groups to bear a message of warning and hope, often resulting in significant social and spiritual agitation:
Enoch: In an age filled with impurity, Enoch walked with God and bore a message of warning through his piety and obedience.
John the Baptist: He created a great agitation, calling whole cities to repentance and turning the world upside down by preparing the way for the Messiah.
The Apostles: They carried out their commission with such power that the heathen oracles were silenced and the established order of idolatry was disrupted.
The Vaudois and Wycliffe: These faithful missionaries felt a solemn responsibility to let their light shine, often facing martyrdom to preserve and spread the purity of the truth.
Restoring the World to its Right Position
While the world viewed the gospel as a disturbance, it was actually a work of restoration. A sensible perspective is that God made the world "right side up," the Devil turned it "upside down" through sin, and Christ and His followers came to place it back where it was at first. Because men have perverted the truth, calling evil good and good evil, the gospel must "invert" the current worldly order to set things right Isaiah 5:20. Even the earth itself will eventually be turned "upside down" by the Lord to empty it of its corruption and prepare it for a future restoration Isaiah 24:1.
Motivation for Personal Missionary Work
God is calling you today to engage in genuine, personal missionary work to reach those who are perishing.
A Missionary Spirit: The first impulse of a heart renewed by grace is to bring others to the Saviour.
Personal Effort: Personal labor and heart-to-heart ministry are often more effective than preaching alone.
Divine Partnership: When you engage in this work, you are a co-worker with Christ and the angels, bringing you closer to heaven.
Using Every Talent: Whether through medical missionary work, distributing literature, or simple prayers with neighbors, everyone has a part to act.
Standing Firm in the Face of Opposition
You should not be discouraged by trials or the fear of causing "agitation." Truth naturally causes division between those who accept it and those who reject it Matthew 10:35-36. In the last days, as Sunday laws and religious intolerance arise, your commitment to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will produce a powerful effect Revelation 14:12. Even when faced with legal difficulties, you are encouraged to continue your missionary work with your Bible in hand, trusting that the love of God is mightier than the sword. The joy of bringing souls to glory far outweighs the light afflictions of the present time 2 Corinthians 4:17.
"Take heed to yourself, and to the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this you shall both save yourself, and them that hear you" 1 Timothy 4:16. Let the science of salvation be the burden of your life and the theme of your witness. 🌟
