🏔️ The Greatest Adventure: Courage for the Heavenly Journey

Young people everywhere love tales of adventure, daring rescues, and heroic conquests. We often look for thrills in worldly entertainment or dream of exploring unknown lands. But the greatest adventure in the entire universe is not found on a pirate ship or a treasure island; it is found in a life totally surrendered to the Lord. God is calling the youth today to embark on a sacred journey of faith, leaving behind a wild spirit of worldly speculation to embrace the true thrill of spiritual victory.

🧒 Children's Story: The Boy Who Defeated a Giant

Let me tell you a true story about a young boy named David who went on a magnificent adventure with God. David was just a stripling, a boy with a well-knit form and a countenance ruddy with health. One day, he went to visit his older brothers at the battlefield, where a massive, terrifying giant named Goliath was threatening God's people. David knew that God was bigger than any giant, and he bravely volunteered to fight him.

King Saul had very small hope that David would be successful in his courageous undertaking. The king commanded that the youth be clothed in his own heavy armor. A heavy helmet of brass was placed upon David's head, and a heavy coat of mail was put upon his body. Thus equipped, David started on his errand, but erelong he began to retrace his steps. The armor was too heavy! He begged permission to lay it aside, saying, “I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them”.

Instead of worldly armor, David took only his staff in his hand, his shepherd's scrip, and a simple sling. He chose five smooth stones out of the brook, put them in his bag, and drew near to the Philistine. The giant strode boldly forward, expecting to meet the mightiest of the warriors of Israel, and he looked as if nothing could withstand him. Between the youthful outline of the boy and the massive proportions of the giant, there was a marked contrast. But David had the ultimate secret weapon: he was on an adventure with God, and with a single smooth stone, the Lord gave him a mighty victory!

🛡️ Point 1: The Call to Christian Heroism

Just like David, God is calling you to a life of true Christian heroism. What young men and women need today is the moral courage to stand up face to face with themselves, put underfoot their own weaknesses, and become strong, manly, and courageous champions for the truth. God requires you to possess moral courage, steadiness of purpose, fortitude, and perseverance. You are called to have minds that will investigate for themselves, that will study and weigh evidence, and take every challenge to the Lord in prayer.

If you feel weak or afraid of the giants in your life, remember the promise of God: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him James 1:5. But you must ask in faith, nothing wavering James 1:6. It takes immense moral courage, firmness, decision, and very much prayer to step out on the unpopular side and keep the commandments of the Lord.

⚔️ Point 2: Trusting in God's Armor

When you step out on this adventure, the world will try to force its own heavy armor upon you, just as Saul tried to clothe David in heavy brass. But you must firmly reject the methods and the armor of this world. God brings us all into trying positions to see if we will trust in a power out of and above ourselves. He sends trials to prove who will stand faithful under temptation, bringing to light undiscovered traits of character.

Instead of the world's armor, you must put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil Ephesians 6:11. Your battles are not ordinary battles; for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places Ephesians 6:12. You must take the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked Ephesians 6:16. God will give you the holy boldness to stand before the world as a praiseworthy example of Christian fidelity.

✝️ Point 3: The Cross and the Mystery of Godliness

How do we find the courage for this great adventure? We look to the cross of Calvary. The standard by which to measure character is the royal law, which acts as the great sin detector Romans 3:31. By the law is the knowledge of our sin, revealing our desperate need for a Savior Romans 3:31. But the sinner is constantly being drawn to Jesus by the wonderful manifestation of His love, in that He humiliated Himself to die a shameful death upon the cross Philippians 3:8.

This is the great mystery of godliness! Angels have earnestly longed to look into this wonderful mystery, a study that can tax the highest human intelligence, that fallen man can be conformed to the image of the Son of the infinite God 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. The cross of Calvary is the life-healing balm that reveals all true virtue. Jesus gave His life that He might bring moral courage to every man to run the race for the immortal crown that fades not away. You are to die to self and behold the Lamb of God that takes away your sin, allowing His righteousness to fulfill your original destiny.

👑 Point 4: Ruling the Spirit in Practical Godliness

The greatest conquest on this adventure is not defeating a physical giant, but conquering your own heart. He that rules his spirit is better than he that takes a city. To rule the spirit means to keep self under strict discipline and to seek earnestly to bring into your life the perfection that is seen in the life of the Savior. The youth must not suppose they can live careless and indulgent lives and yet be able to stand firm for the truth in times of trial.

God's abounding love and presence in your heart will give you the power of self-control, and will mold and fashion your mind and character. The grace of Christ will direct your aims and capabilities into channels that give you spiritual power to carry into the future life. Therefore, watch you, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong 1 Corinthians 16:13.

🙏 The Appeal: What Are You Going to Do?

My dear friends, the Light of the world is our Leader, and the path grows brighter and brighter as we advance in the footsteps of Jesus. But many are not on safe ground, and we must make earnest, thorough work to seek to be complete in Christ Jesus. There is a mighty contest abroad, and the demand for Christian courage was never greater than it is today.

What are you going to do? Will you step out and join the adventure? Will you lay off the heavy, burdensome armor of the world's expectations and take up the simple tools of faith? I appeal to you today to make a covenant with God by sacrifice and take hold of His work. Come to the Savior in humility, confessing your sins, and asking for strength and grace. Do not delay. Give your heart to Jesus right now, forsake your sins, and let Him fill you with the moral courage to be a hero for His kingdom!
