Identifying the Beast of Revelation 13 and its Mark

The beast from the sea in Revelation 13 represents the Roman Papacy, and Sunday observance is the mark of its authority, established in opposition to the fourth commandment of God. 📖

🦁 The First Beast: Rome in its Papal Form

The first beast of Revelation 13:1-2 is described as having the characteristics of the four beasts found in Daniel 7:3-7—the lion, the bear, the leopard, and the ten-horned beast. This shows that the Papacy is the successor to the previous universal monarchies (Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Pagan Rome).

• Its Source of Power: The dragon (Pagan Rome) gave this beast "his power, and his seat, and great authority" Revelation 13:2.

• A Persecuting Power: It was given power to "make war with the saints" for a period of forty-two months, which is the same as the 1,260-year period of supremacy Revelation 13:5-7+1.

• A Blasphemous Power: This power "opens his mouth in blasphemy against God" and "thinks to change times and laws," specifically targeting the law of the Most High Revelation 13:6+1.

✍️ The Seal of God vs. The Mark of the Beast

In scripture, a seal or sign identifies the authority and territory of a lawgiver. The Sabbath is the specific sign of the true God.

• The Sign of Creation: God gave the seventh-day Sabbath as a perpetual sign that He is the Creator and the one who sanctifies His people Exodus 31:13+1.

• The Content of the Seal: The fourth commandment contains the three essential elements of a seal: God’s Name ("The LORD thy God"), His Title ("Creator/Maker"), and His Territory ("heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is") Exodus 20:8-11.

• The Counterfeit Mark: The Papacy claims the act of changing the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday as a "mark" of its ecclesiastical power. By enforcing a tradition of men over a direct command of God, it sets its authority above the Creator Mark 7:7+1.

⚖️ The Final Test of Worship

The Third Angel’s Message warns that the world will be divided into two classes: those who worship God by keeping His commandments and those who worship the beast by receiving its mark.

• The Warning: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God" Revelation 14:9-10.

• The Character of the Saints: In contrast to those who receive the mark, the saints are identified as those who "keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" Revelation 14:12.
