Understanding the Biblical Concept of a Living Soul

Is your soul an immortal spirit or your entire living being?

What is a soul according to the Bible?

AdventAI

A soul, according to the Bible, is a living being, a whole person, or life itself, rather than an invisible, immortal essence that survives apart from the physical body.

Welcome to our Bible study! Let us open God's Word together to discover the beautiful and clear truth about what a soul truly is. 📖✨

🌱 The Creation of a Soul

To understand what a soul is, we must look at how God created humanity in the very beginning.

  • ** Genesis 2:7** says, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Notice carefully the divine equation of creation: Dust of the ground + Breath of life = A living soul.

God did not give man a separate, floating entity called a soul. Instead, when God combined the physical body with His life-giving breath, the man became a living soul. The soul is the complete, living person!

👥 A Soul Means a Person or Creature

Throughout Scripture, the word "soul" is frequently used to count or describe people, and even animals!

  • ** 1 Peter 3:20** describes the people saved in Noah's ark: "...wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." Peter is simply referring to eight living people.

  • ** Job 12:10** shows that animals are also considered souls: "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."

⚰️ Can a Soul Die?

A popular misconception is that the soul is naturally immortal and cannot die. However, the Bible teaches with absolute certainty that souls are mortal and subject to death.

  • ** Ezekiel 18:4** declares, "Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, it shall die." (Reiterated in ** Ezekiel 18:20**).

  • ** Psalm 89:48** asks, "What man is he that lives, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah."

  • ** Joshua 10:30** gives a historical account of physical death, stating that Joshua smote the city "with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein."

A soul can be destroyed by a sword, go into the grave, and completely die. God alone possesses immortality naturally. We do not receive immortality until the resurrection when Jesus returns! As ** 1 Corinthians 15:53-54** promises, "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."

🩸 What About the Souls Under the Altar?

Some may wonder about the symbolic vision in Revelation where souls are crying out.

  • ** Revelation 6:9** says, "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God..."

These are the faithful martyrs who were slain on the earth. Are they disembodied spirits in heaven? No! The altar represents the earth where their blood was spilled. They cry out for justice in the exact same symbolic way that Abel’s spilled blood cried out from the ground in ** Genesis 4:10: "...the voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground." The Bible assures us that these faithful believers do not live again until the resurrection of the just ( Revelation 20:4-6**).

✝️ The Gift of Eternal Life in Christ

Because the soul is our very life and complete being, we must entrust it entirely to our Creator. Jesus warns us not to fear men who can only end our present physical life, but to revere God who holds our eternal destiny.

  • ** Matthew 10:28** teaches: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

  • ** Matthew 10:39** gives us a wonderful promise: "He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it."

When we surrender our lives—our entire souls—to Jesus Christ, He promises to restore us and grant us the incredible gift of eternal life at His glorious return!
