16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

In Colossians 1:16 these terms describe the vast hierarchy of authority and the various orders of beings created by and for Jesus Christ, encompassing both the visible and invisible worlds. While Christ is the supreme sovereign seated on the eternal throne with the Father, these specific titles designate different ranks of heavenly agencies and earthly governments that are all ultimately subject to His rightful rule.

The Meaning of the Four Orders

  • Thrones: This term represents the highest seats of dignity and judicial authority, both in the heavenly courts and on earth. In heaven, the Son is seated on the throne with the Father, invested with authority to command the entire heavenly host. On earth, thrones represent the civil power given to rulers and kings, which are ordained by God to maintain order among men.

  • Dominions: This refers to unlimited authority and government over specific territories or realms. True dominion belongs to Christ, who will eventually possess the kingdoms of this world and rule from sea to sea. However, the term also acknowledges the current state of the world where a usurper, Satan, has claimed authority over the hearts of men and established a kingdom of darkness.

  • Principalities: These are the primary orders of leadership and high-ranking agencies within the spiritual realm. There are holy principalities that serve as unseen agencies commissioned to aid and strengthen humanity. Conversely, there are "principalities and powers" of darkness—fallen angels led by Satan—that engage in a constant conflict against the followers of Christ.

  • Powers: This encompasses the capacity to exercise influence, execute laws, and perform deeds of great strength. It refers to the "higher powers" or civil magistracy to whom every soul should be subject in temporal matters, as well as the spiritual power granted to believers through the Holy Spirit to withstand temptation.

The Supremacy of Christ over All

Everything was created for Christ's glory and is maintained by His word. Although some of these powers, such as the "man of sin," have sought to exalt themselves above all that is called God and change His laws, their dominion is limited and will eventually be taken away by divine judgment.

  • Divine Authority: Christ is the only power that is supreme, and His law is the authority over the consciences of all men.

  • Spiritual Warfare: Believers do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against these very principalities and powers in high places, finding their only safety by hiding in the strength of Christ.

  • Future Restoration: When the Son of Man comes in His glory, He will sit upon the throne of His glory and receive the full dominion promised by the Father.

Relevant Scripture

  • Christ’s Eternal Throne: The Father addressed the Son, saying, "Thy throne, O God, is for ever" Psa 45:6.

  • The Conflict: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" Ephesians 6:12.

  • Earthly Authority: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God" Romans 13:1.

  • The Coming Kingdom: "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven... And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom" Daniel 7:13-14.
