1 Corinthians 8

1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, ( as there be gods many, and lords many,)

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

Eating food offered to idols is a grave matter because it involves participating in acts that dishonor God and can become a stumbling block to others. While some may feel they have the knowledge to navigate such situations, the principles of true religion and loyalty to Jehovah require a total separation from anything consecrated to false deities.

The Conflict of Loyalty and Idolatry

Sitting at a table where food has been dedicated to idols is considered a dishonor to the God of heaven. Such an act implicates the believer with heathenism and violates the principles of their faith, just as Daniel and his companions recognized in the courts of Babylon. Even a mere pretense of partaking in such a meal can be seen as a denial of one's faith.

  • Dishonoring God: To partake of food or wine dedicated to an idol god is to implicate oneself with heathenism.

  • A Matter of Conscience: Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself with the king's meat or wine, recognizing that the blessing asked over the meal addressed idols as Deity.

  • Biblical Precedent: The apostles and elders explicitly instructed believers to abstain from meats offered to idols to avoid conflict and prejudice.

Avoiding Stumbling Blocks

One of the most significant reasons to avoid food offered to idols is the influence it has on others. Knowledge alone is not enough; one must consider how their actions affect those with a weaker conscience or those who are newly come to the faith. We are commanded to take every stumbling block out of the way to ensure the pathway to salvation is clear for all.

  • Influence on the Weak: Many who are struggling with temptation can be lost if they see those in positions of influence acting inconsistently.

  • The Law of Love: Whether we eat or drink, we are to do all to the glory of God, ensuring our liberty does not become a trap for others 1 Corinthians 10:31.

  • A Solemn Responsibility: We will have to give an account for our neglect of those whom we might have blessed and upheld but instead caused to stumble.

True Temperance and Spiritual Clarity

The habits of diet are intimately connected to our characters and eternal destiny. Indulging in a diet that stimulates lower passions or confuses the mind prevents divine truth from making a lasting impression. True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful and to use judiciously only that which is healthful.

  • The Body as a Temple: We are the temple of the living God and must not have any agreement with idols.

  • Clear Mind for Service: Daniel's refusal of the king's luxuries was based on the understanding that such food would not keep the mind or body in the best condition for God's service.

  • A Call to Reform: God requires that we present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him, which is our reasonable service Romans 12:1.

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" 1 Corinthians 10:31. We must be careful not to make our table a snare or a stumbling block to ourselves or our neighbors. 🌟
