It is wonderful to delve into the glorious attributes of our God! The Bible reveals Him in such magnificent ways, showing us His character and His boundless power. Let us explore some of these beautiful descriptions together. ๐
God is Almighty
This title, "Almighty," speaks to God's absolute and supreme power. He is able to do all things, and nothing is impossible for Him. From the very beginning, God revealed Himself in this way to His people.
The Bible tells us:
"And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect." - * Genesis 17:1*
"And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;" - * Genesis 35:11*
This mighty power is a source of blessing for His children:
"Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:" - * Genesis 49:25*
We see this power at work throughout history and in prophecy:
"And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." - * Revelation 19:6*
This verse reminds us that His reign is absolute and eternal. There is no power that can stand against Him.
His almightiness means we can trust in Him fully, for He is "mighty to save":
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." - * Hebrews 7:25*
God is Omnipresent
God is not confined to one place; He is present everywhere at all times. His infinite being fills the universe, and nothing can be hidden from His sight.
The Psalmist beautifully expresses this truth:
"O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it." - * Psalm 139:1-6*
And in the book of Proverbs, it is affirmed:
"The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good." - * Proverbs 15:3*
This means that even in the deepest darkness or the most secluded places, God is there. He sees, He knows, and He cares. We can never escape His presence, nor should we wish to, for His presence brings comfort and conviction.
God is Eternal
He has always been and always will be. He is without beginning or end, existing outside of time itself.
Moses declared this truth to Israel:
"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them." - * Deuteronomy 33:27*
Paul speaks of Him as:
"Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." - * 1 Timothy 1:17*
"Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen." - * 1 Timothy 6:16*
This assures us that God's plans and promises are steadfast, for He does not change. His love and faithfulness are everlasting because He is the "everlasting God." โจ
God is the Only True God
The Bible consistently emphasizes that there is only one true God, and there is none beside Him.
Isaiah proclaims:
"Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." - * Isaiah 44:6*
"O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth." - * Isaiah 37:16*
Jesus Himself, in His prayer, states:
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." - * John 17:3*
This means our worship and trust belong to Him alone, for He is the one who created all things and sustains all life.
God is the Lord of Hosts
This title speaks to God's supreme authority and power over all heavenly and earthly armies, all created beings, and all events. He is the Commander of countless angelic hosts.
The prophet Jeremiah declares:
"Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon." - * Jeremiah 50:34*
"Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth." - * Jeremiah 25:32*
This name brings comfort, knowing that the God we serve is in control, even when the world seems chaotic. He fights for His people and will ultimately bring about His perfect will.
God is Our Living God
He is not a distant or inactive deity, but a vibrant, active, and personal God who interacts with His creation and His people.
Joshua reminds Israel:
"Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites." - * Joshua 3:10*
The Apostle Paul encourages us to serve Him:
"For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;" - * 1 Thessalonians 1:9*
It is a fearful, yet awe-inspiring, truth to consider:
"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." - * Hebrews 10:31*
Yet, for those who seek Him, He is also a God who hears prayers and actively works in their lives.
Understanding these attributes helps us to grasp the immensity and goodness of our Heavenly Father. When we face challenges, we can remember that the Lord God Almighty reigns, that He is omnipresent, and that His everlasting arms are underneath us. We can trust His perfect wisdom and love, knowing that He is the only true and living God, the Lord of hosts, who cares for us deeply. ๐โค๏ธ๐
