The God of Fashion: Idolatry and Spiritual Decay
Can your choice of clothing become a barrier to entering heaven?
The god of fashion
AdventAI
The "god of fashion" is a deceptive power that leads people to sacrifice modesty, health, and spiritual vitality in order to follow the ever-changing customs of the world. This devotion to outward appearance serves as a form of modern idolatry that separates the soul from Christ.
The Spiritual Impact of Fashion
A Rival to God: Obedience to fashion's whims is often more readily given than obedience to the commands of God, effectively placing the world in the position of a deity.
Spiritual Decay: Following worldly fashions "eats out" the spirituality of believers, leaving them with a mere form of religion while they are spiritually dead.
A Barrier to Heaven: In the heavenly scales, thoughts of dress and vanity weigh heavily toward the earth, and an angel has warned that those consumed by such interests cannot enter heaven.
Idolatry: Even without physical shrines, cherishing fashionable ideas and display is as much idolatry as worshiping gods of wood or stone.
Effects on Health and Character
Robbing Children of Health: Parents who follow fashion by leaving their children's limbs exposed to the cold cause the life current to be chilled back, leading to disease and potentially sacrificing life itself to the "god of fashion".
Distorting the Human Form: Fashionable inventions like hoops are considered an abomination and a shame, as the Creator never designed the human body to be deformed by such unnecessary articles.
Mental and Moral Decline: The effort to keep pace with the world's standard deteriorates the intellect and robs mothers of the time needed to educate their children for eternity.
A Stumbling Block to Others
Preaching a False Sermon: When those who profess to be Christians dress like the world, they lead unbelievers to conclude that the truth has no sanctifying power, thus becoming stumbling blocks to those who might otherwise seek salvation.
Church Discipline: Pride in dress is so serious that it should be considered a sufficient reason for church discipline, as it proves the heart is not assimilated to Christ.
The Call to Separation
God is purifying a peculiar people who are to be a living rebuke to the world's pride Titus 2:14. We are called to:
Renounce Worldliness: We must be willing to suffer a little inconvenience or even be considered "peculiar" to remain on the safe side of God's requirements.
Seek Inward Adornment: Instead of costly ornamentation, we should seek the "ornament of a meek and quiet spirit," which is of great price in God's sight 1 Peter 3:3-4.
Recognize Our Stewardship: Money squandered on fashionable display is actually God’s money, which should be used to advance His work and help the needy.
We must remember that we are not our own; we have been bought with a price and are called to glorify God in both our body and spirit 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Only by detaching ourselves from these cherished idols can we truly unite with Christ.
